More than 50 residents of Vannarapettai in Ward 5 of Udhagamandalam Municipality organised a demonstration on the Ooty-Kothagiri Road on Friday.
The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Communist
Party of India-Marxist, Communist Party of India and Viduthalai
Chiruthaigal Katchi organised a demonstration in Sivananda Colony on
Friday demanding that water supply be improved.
R.R.
Mohankumar (MDMK), V. Ramamoorthy(CPI-M), K.M. Selvaraj (CPI) and J.
Ilakkiyan (VCK), led the demonstration. They condemned the Coimbatore
Corporation for poor traffic management. The civic body has failed to
regulate traffic during peak hours, they said.
The
corporation’s delay in re-laying roads it dug for underground drainage
resulted in roads becoming unfit for vehicle movement. They condemned
the State Government for its delay in shifting the high-tension power
lines for the new flyover in Gandhipuram.
If the
authorities failed to improve the water supply, they would soon organise
a protest in front of the civic body’s office in Town Hall.
P.R. Natarajan, a former MP, and M. Arumugham, MLA, were present.
Udhagamandalam
More
than 50 residents of Vannarapettai in Ward 5 of Udhagamandalam
Municipality organised a demonstration on the Ooty-Kothagiri Road on
Friday demanding that water supply be improved. They had held a protest a
week ago with the demand carrying empty pots.
Te
municipal officials had promised to restore water supply from the Parson
Valley reservoir, as they found the alternate day supply through
lorries thoroughly inadequate.
Senior citizens found it difficult to collect water from lorries.
The
residents said that they, however, gave up the protest following
promises from the officials. But things did not improve. They wanted the
civic body to complete the third water supply scheme at the earliest.
Municipal Commissioner Sardar promised them that the the situation would improve in a day or two.
Vannarapettai is home to 2,000-odd families.
