Rohan, a resident of nearby Khoda, had developed a tumour in his spinal cord that had rendered him unable to walk and lose control over his bladder and bowel, a spokesperson of the hospital said on Wednesday.

Following consultations at few other hospitals, including AIIMS, the parents of the boy came to the hospital here, where a surgery was conducted on him on November 25, said V B Joshi, spokesperson of Kailash hospital.

Dr Varun Bhargava, the senior neurosurgeon operating on the child, had opened the patient's spinal cord from neck to lower end of back. The tumour was operated microscopically successfully. Following the surgery, the boy was kept in ICU on ventilator under a team led by Dr Anil Gurnani, he said.

This is the first case where two-third of spinal cord tumour was removed for the first time, Mr Joshi claimed.
