Evening playtime between two brothers turned fatal on Sunday after one of them accidentally ended up killing himself.
Soham More (11) and Dhruv More (6) were playing swing with their mother's duppata by hanging it on the ceiling on their mezzanine floor, when the 11-year-old accidentally hanged himself when he jumped from the table after wrapping the dupatta around his neck.
According to the Kanjurmarg police, on Sunday evening, the boys were locked inside their house at Shiv Krupa Nagar in Kanjurmarg (East) by their mother, as she stepped out to a beauty parlour.
Both Soham and Dhruv were playing on the mazzanine floor of their house when Soham came up with the idea of playing swing with his mother's dupatta.
"Soham tied the dupatta against a hook on the ceiling after standing on a table on the mazzine floor," said A Satpute, senior police inspector.
"During our inquiry, we came to know that Soham initially swung with the dupatta after tying it on his chest. Later, he wrapped it around his neck and jumped from the table. The dupatta got stuck on his neck, leading to his death," he said.
The Kanjurmarg police said that Soham's younger brother, Dhruv, witnessed the entire incident. "When Soham died, his body collapsed on the floor. Dhruv called him a number of times but there was no response", said an officer.
"When there was no response from Soham, Dhruv thought his elder brother would be tired. Hence, he went off to sleep and even slept next to him," said an officer.
When Soham's mother Mansi returned home, she found Soham sleeping motionless on the floor and froth coming out of his mouth. Sensing something has gone terribly wrong, Mansi alerted the neighbours, who rushed Soham to a local hospital and from there to Godrej Hospital.
"We were informed by the Godrej Hospital authorities, who declared Soham dead before admission. We have registered an accidental death report in the case as the family members have not raised any suspicion", said Satpute.
