Typhoon Melor weakened Tuesday as it crossed over the central Philippines, leaving one man dead and wide areas without power. About 730,000 people were evacuated to safer grounds before the typhoon hit.
The government weather bureau said Melor was northwest of central Romblon Island, packing winds of 140 kilometers (87 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 170 kph (106 mph). Classes, flights and ferry trips remain suspended in affected areas.
Speaking
at the Pentagon after meeting with his National Security Council, Obama
revealed that a group of American special operations commandos has
begun working with local fighters in Syria to “tighten the squeeze” on
Raqqa. He highlighted the anti-IS coalition’s mission to destroy the
Islamic State from its root. “We are going after their stronghold in
Raqqa to Libya where we took out Abu Nabil, the IS leader there. We all
are hitting ISIL harder than ever. Coalition aircraft bombers and drones
are increasing the pace of their strikes. Nearly 9,000 as of today,” he
added.
In November, we dropped more bombs on ISIL targets than any other month since the campaign started, said Obama. “We are taking out ISIL leaders, commanders and killers one by one. ISIl has lost thousand of square miles it once controlled in Syria and continue to lose more.” Obama said his strategy is moving ahead with “a great sense of urgency,” an assertion that critics say belies the slow pace of progress in Iraq and Syria.
